Founded in 1709, Beaufort is a charming coastal town situated on Beaufort Inlet, which connects to the Atlantic Ocean. As the third oldest town in NC, Beaufort maintains a small-town feel with its modest population of around 4,000 residents. However, during the warmer months, the town comes alive with visitors from across the globe.
Originally known as Fishtown, Beaufort's early economy relied heavily on local natural resources. Fishing, whaling, lumber production, naval stores, shipbuilding, and farming were the primary economic activities. The town was later renamed after Henry Somerset, Duke of Beaufort.
Despite having the safest and most navigable harbor among North Carolina's ports, Beaufort's commercial growth was limited due to its isolation from the interior. Today, the town is renowned for its laid-back atmosphere, well-preserved historic homes, and unexpectedly high-quality dining and entertainment options.
